Compare Text Files Online

Upload two text-based files to generate a readable redline. Built for contracts, policies, specs, and any UTF-8 document you can open as plain text.

Read how it works

How text file compare works

Drop two text-based files onto the upload panes. Compare Text reads the contents in the browser, computes additions and deletions, and presents a split or unified redline with line numbers and change statistics. Save the session to history when you need to revisit a vendor draft later.

Need a different format? You can also compare PDF files or compare text online without leaving compare-text.online.

Why teams use this tool

  • Drag-and-drop upload for UTF-8 text files
  • Line-level and word-level change highlighting
  • Similarity percentage and change counts
  • Export an HTML report for stakeholders
  • Works alongside PDF Compare for scanned packets

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload both text file versions

Drag in .txt, .md, .csv, source files, or other UTF-8 documents — one original, one modified. Export Word (.docx) to plain text or Markdown first.

  2. 2

    Review the redline

Switch between split and unified views, jump changes, and note similarity plus addition/deletion counts.

  3. 3

    Export for stakeholders

Send an HTML report when legal or product partners need a shareable artifact of the file compare.

Text file compare without Track Changes

Often each party sends a clean file. This tool rebuilds a redline from two independent copies so you still see every insertion and deletion. Use it for MSAs, SOWs, security questionnaires exported to text, and product requirement docs that live outside Word.

Choosing the right comparer

Native PDFs belong on PDF Compare. Spreadsheet CSVs belong on CSV Compare. Screenshots belong on Image Diff. This page is for text-based files and dumps you can read as UTF-8 — not binary .docx packages.

Common compare text files online use cases

Contract and MSA redlines

Compare vendor paper against your playbook, or v2 of an MSA against v1, without losing a liability cap or data-retention clause — after exporting to text.

Product specs and RFCs

Review requirement docs and design notes where a single word change can alter implementation scope.

Compliance policies

Audit privacy notices, security policies, and SOP updates before they go to legal or an auditor.

Compare Text Files Online FAQ

Which file formats can I compare here?
Any text-based file the browser can read — .txt, .md, .csv, source files, logs, and similar UTF-8 documents. For native PDFs, use PDF Compare. For spreadsheet grids, use CSV Compare. Binary .docx is not unpacked in the browser.
Can I compare Word documents (.docx)?
Not directly. Save or export the Word files to plain text or Markdown first, then upload them here. Binary .docx packages are not unpacked in the browser.
How is this different from Track Changes?
You do not need a single document with revision markup. Compare Text Files builds a redline from two independent files when each party sent a clean copy.
Are uploaded files stored?
Files are read locally for comparison. They are only persisted if you save them to browser history.
